Why Make Your Own Gear? 8 Reasons


Once I started making my own gear, I never want to stop. Acquiring new skills change my perspective when I look at ready to buy products. I imagine how they are constructed, and look at each feature and imagine the intent behind it.

Here are reasons why I like to make my own gear, and why someone else might want to.

1. Because you want to. Maybe you are one of those people who is just wired to create. You feel intrigued thinking about projects that you want to make and it just sounds fun to you! I hope that everyone can find things in life that they enjoy doing and have the time to do them, so if making gear sounds fun to you, then I hope you do it!

2. Save money. Acquiring all the necessary gear can be expensive. Sometimes, you can make the same thing you want using recycled or even free materials if you are willing to spend some extra effort. Some pieces of gear are extraordinarily simple but a company is going to have to still pay its laborers and logistics people to get it to you, plus retail markups. You can skip all of that if you want to make your own. Some gear is more complicated and it may be more economical to buy it from a company. Having the ability to make your own however will give you a choice on this, and you can maximize the efficiency of your budget.

3. Customizability. Maybe the gear that you use is really great, but something could be slightly different to make it even more efficient for your purposes. Making your own can definitely do this, and having the skills to make your own usually means having the skills to modify gear that someone else made. You have control over every feature including colors, fabric, dimensions, and you can make it exactly to the specifications you want.

4. Gifts. Once you can make your own gear you can make custom gifts for your friends and family. You may even be able to make something nicer than you would want to spend with less money and more time. Plus handmade gifts usually mean a lot to people we are close to.

5. Snowballing skills and efficiency. Once you start making your own and acquiring the tools and materials, it gets easier with every piece you make, you advance in skills and the options of what you can make just expands. If you like to be creative you will always have a new project to look forward to.

6. Control over craftsmanship. Maybe you have brands that you trust how something was constructed, but maybe you’ve tested out gear and you found out that there are certain places that are more easily prone to breakage. When you make your own gear, you can reinforce every component that you wish to make it in a way that you know will last for your personal use. You can pick threads and materials that you know can handle the elements for your specific use.

7. Grow your design skills. Stretch your brain creatively and critically thinking about making items that are easy to use, easy to clean, and built to last!
